Don’t let your fear of interviews scare you off a TEFL career! Even if you don’t have any experience teaching, if you’re prepared, there’s no reason you won’t ace that interview.
What happens in a TEFL interview is very similar to an interview for any job. But, because it’s likely that you’re applying for a teaching job abroad, the interview will probably take place over Skype or Google Meet.
Firstly, they will ask you about yourself and your qualifications. Because it’s a teaching position, if you have any experience teaching or tutoring, you should mention that. While there is no way for them to test your teaching skills, so to speak, they will probably ask you to react to a few hypothetical situations.
Or they could ask you to walk them through a hypothetical lesson for a particular age group or language point.
Common TEFL interview questions are:
- Why do you want to teach English?
- Why do you want to teach English in Thailand/Italy/Argentina?
- What do you think makes a good TEFL teacher?
- How would you deal with discipline in the classroom?
At the end of the interview, you will be given the opportunity to ask your own questions. Some ideas are:
- How many students in a class?
- How many hours a week will I be teaching?
- How many other foreign teachers are there in the school?
