As a trainee or novice EFL teacher, you may decide to do some volunteer EFL teaching abroad at some point in your EFL teaching career. Here are three of the many exotic countries that you could choose to teach in.
Costa Rica is a dream location if you want to teach English in a relaxing, slow-paced environment. This Spanish speaking country is located in Central America: it is contiguous with Nicaragua in the north and Panama in the south; the west coast is washed by the waters on the North Pacific Ocean and the east coast by the waters of the Caribbean Sea. It’s a country of lush, tropical rainforests, and sun-kissed beaches.
There is also a lot to see: volcanoes (e.g. Arenal, and Poás) national parks (e.g. Chirripó, and Manuel Antonio), museums and art galleries (e.g. the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica). If you are the sort of person who likes rambling, climbing, exploring, water sports, or just lying on the beach then Costa Rica is definitely the dream voluntary ESL teaching destination.
Cambodia (“The Kingdom of Wonder”) is a great place to teach ESL if you are interested in ancient civilizations. Cambodia (Kampuchea) is located in South East Asia: it is bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, but the southeast of the country is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand.
Angkor Wat is Cambodia’s greatest tourist attraction: dating from 1125, the original Hindu temple subsequently became a Buddhist temple, and it is the largest religious monument in the world. Apart from Angkor Wat, there are many other attractions: the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh (the capital), the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Preah Monivong National Park, and the island of Koh Thonsáy. If you are keen on colonial architecture, you’ll also enjoy the chance to see some of the finest old French colonial-style buildings which date from the time when Cambodia was part of French Indochina.
Ghana (the Gold Coast) is located in West Africa: it is bordered by Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo; the south of the country is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.
There’s a lot to see and do, for example, you can go on a safari in the Mole National Park; you can visit one of the thirteen old slave castles (e.g. Cape Coast Castle), and you can sunbathe on the beautiful Kokrobite Beach.
If you like wildlife and safaris, this is the voluntary ESL teaching destination for you.
